In a recent X post, he made his long-term vision clear to readers: he wants Ethereum to become a self-sustaining platform that will withstand quantum-computing threats for decades to come, whether or not developers are around to continue upgrading the protocol.
This doesn’t mean that upgrades should cease – au contraire, protocol changes are to continue. It’s just that Ethereum should be able to “ossify”, and pass the “walkaway test”, meaning to keep working predictably and securely without ongoing protocol intervention.
For devs, investors, and businesses alike, this shift has deep implications. A blockchain that can ossify offers not just technical reliability but also greater market predictability, which can influence long-term usage and asset valuation. Protocol stability is a key factor in institutional adoption and market confidence, both of which further impact the asset’s market valuation and, consequently, the willingness of investors to buy Ethereum. For users and devs, this means the apps running on Ethereum remain reliable, censorship-resistant, and fraud-proof, without relying on ongoing protocol changes.

Essentially, the network itself must embody the same trust-minimized principles that dApps strive to provide, at the same time supporting innovation. How?
Ethereum should continue evolving through modular L2 solutions, parameter updates, and client optimization over the next several years, all while maintaining the base protocol resilient and stable. Developers don’t need to intervene constantly to ensure the system’s usability and security remain foolproof.
This should make it easier for institutions to continue adopting Ethereum as a reliable infrastructure across governance, payments, and more. 7 tech milestones towards ossifiability
Buterin has outlined seven big tech goals to achieve ossifiability in one of his latest X posts:
Full quantum resistance is another critical goal. Right now, Ethereum, as the bulk of blockchains do, uses cryptography to safeguard transactions and control who owns what, but as quantum computing advances by the day, the system needs to be unbreakable by quantum computers and remain safe and trustworthy. In essence, Ethereum aims to transition to quantum-resistant cryptographic algorithms and update its signature schemes to ensure transaction trustworthiness and account security well into the future.
Peer Data Availability Sampling (PeerDAS) and Zero-Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machines (ZK-EVMs), two approaches that address the blockchain trilemma by separating data execution and availability, are essential to improving throughput while ensuring the blockchain remains decentralized even under centralization pressures.
Ethereum must redesign the way it tracks data, so the chain can continue to expand in the future without stalling due to requirements that are too heavy, expensive, or difficult to handle, in terms of computing power, storage, memory, or bandwidth alike.
According to Buterin, Ethereum must strengthen its staking system to keep Ethereum a dependable and trustless asset that encourages widespread participation – key factors for keeping the network decentralized.
Other goals emphasized by Buterin include designing execution and gas pricing to future-proof Ethereum against denial-of-service attacks, strengthening Ethereum’s proof-of-stake economics to maintain decentralization, and ensuring that no centralized actors can gain control over block production. All transactions must remain permissionless and transparent.
Stability, essential for devs, users, institutions, and more
Ossification essentially entails fewer protocol changes that could incapacitate apps, or require urgent software patches if something goes south. At the same time, developers can build apps with smart contracts and tools that prioritize predictability, meaning they can focus on their work knowing the platform's rules won’t change overnight. At institutional level, the impact is even clearer – predictability, whether regulatory or technical, is a key factor for large financial firms considering integrating blockchain-based apps at scale.

By slashing “protocol risk”, Ethereum positions itself as a dependable settlement layer, as development and innovation continue on L2 networks and modular platforms. By 2025, 6 in 10 Ethereum transactions were processed on L2s, to emphasize their weight.
Flourishing network activity among devs
Beyond tech milestones, it’s worth noting that Ethereum’s ecosystem continues to thrive. Thousands of developers are building decentralized apps across finance, gaming, and identity systems, while millions of users participate in decentralized finance and NFT marketplaces every day. According to 2025 reports from the Ethereum Foundation, the network attracted more than 16K new devs between January and September of that year, contributing to the platform’s persisting leader position.
Ethereum’s broad adoption, coupled with active community governance and innovative projects, underscores its role as a keystone of the web3 economy, and its long-term potential in shaping tomorrow’s digital world.
Buterin said in earlier tweets and updates that Ethereum has efficiently solved the security, scalability, and decentralization trilemma in 2025 via live integrations of ZK-EVMs and availability sampling. From now on, long-term stability and safety are on the agenda. The target is to get the design job done once and for good instead of struggling with solutions to potential software weaknesses later.
