Sometimes I scroll through Facebook, see a video I like, then accidentally swipe away. A few seconds later, it’s gone. I forget who posted it. I can’t find it in my feed. And just like that, it disappears into the algorithm void.
If you’ve been in that spot (and I’m guessing you have) there’s actually a way to check what you’ve recently watched. It’s not right in front of you, but it’s there. Facebook doesn’t make it obvious, which is maybe the frustrating part. But once you know where to look, it’s easy.
Here’s exactly how I find my recently watched videos on the Facebook app.
Start with the obvious: your activity log
This is where Facebook keeps track of nearly everything you do: likes, comments, searches, videos, the works.
To get there:
Open the Facebook app
Tap your profile picture (bottom right)
Tap the three dots next to “Edit profile”
Select Activity log
Inside, there’s a filter menu. That’s what you want next.
Filter to videos watched
This step feels hidden. You might miss it if you're not paying attention.
Here’s how to narrow it down:
In the Activity log, tap “Filters”
Then select “Categories”
Choose “Videos watched”
You’ll see a list of every video you've played. Most are labeled by date. You might not see thumbnails or titles, which makes it harder, but the list helps jog your memory.
I often recognize videos just by the timestamp or how long I watched them. It’s not perfect, but it works.
Try the “Watch” tab history
There’s another place that keeps track (kind of). It doesn’t always show everything, but it’s worth checking.
Steps:
Tap the Watch tab (video icon in the bottom menu)
Tap your profile photo in the top right
Scroll down and tap “History”
Sometimes this shows more recent content than the activity log. Other times, it's a bit glitchy. I’ve seen it miss a video I definitely watched. Not sure why that happens, but I check both places just in case.
Search for the video manually
If you remember part of the title or the name of the page, try searching.
Tap the search icon
Type what you remember: keywords, page names, whatever comes to mind
Filter by Videos in the results
This doesn’t guarantee anything, but I’ve found old clips this way more than once. Especially meme pages. They repost the same stuff every few weeks.
Why it’s hard to find these videos
I’ve always found it a little odd. Facebook remembers every click, like, and scroll, yet somehow doesn’t give us a simple list of what we’ve just watched. No quick access. No obvious “recently viewed” section. Just… nothing.
And maybe that’s not accidental.
Videos on Facebook feel designed to be temporary. You scroll, watch for a few seconds, maybe laugh, maybe don’t, then move on. That’s the whole flow: short, fast, forgettable. It keeps you watching, but not necessarily remembering. There’s no playlist. No queue. No watch history sitting in plain sight.
If you want to go back, you kind of have to dig.
And unless you already know about the Activity Log or the Watch tab’s buried history option, there’s not much guidance. The app doesn’t prompt you. It doesn’t really help you retrace your steps. It’s like the content is meant to disappear into the feed once it’s done its job.
I’m not saying it’s a trap, but it definitely keeps you moving forward, not backward. Which is exactly why those tucked-away tools matter once you know where they are.

What about videos from Reels?

If you’re watching them from the Watch tab, there’s a better chance they’ll end up in your Watch history. But even then, it’s hit or miss. I’ve tried retracing my steps to find a Reel I watched literally minutes ago, and it was just gone. Not in history. Not in activity. Not even in my recent likes, because I forgot to hit the button.
The worst is when you catch a funny or useful Reel mid-scroll in your feed. You laugh, maybe think, “I’ll send that to someone later,” but you swipe down just a little too fast. And then… gone. You can’t search by caption. You can’t filter just Reels. And unless you saved, shared, or liked it, your odds of finding it again are slim.
It’s frustrating, honestly. The system feels like it’s built for endless consumption, not recovery. So yeah, if you're watching Reels and you care even slightly about finding them again later, you have to act in the moment. Otherwise, consider them lost.

Saved items go to your Saved tab:

Everything you save (videos, posts, links) gets stored here. It’s underused, but pretty handy once you start using it.

I’ve gotten in the habit of saving any video I might want to find again. Even if I’m not sure.
It’s just easier than digging through history later.
Takes half a second. And it doesn’t notify the person who posted it, if that’s something you’re worried about.
What if the video was deleted?
Sometimes you just can’t find it because it’s gone.
The page deleted it. Or maybe the privacy was changed. Or Facebook’s own system glitched.
If it's gone, there’s not much you can do. You can try checking if someone reuploaded it. Or maybe a friend saw it too and can send a copy. But if no one else saved it, it might just be lost.
That part still frustrates me.
A thought on memory and algorithms
It’s strange, honestly. How much we now rely on an app to remember things for us.
I’ll watch an entire video, maybe even enjoy it, and then (ten minutes later) I can’t recall what it was about. Not the title. Not who posted it. Nothing. If I didn’t like it or save it, it might as well have never existed. The only trace is buried somewhere in the activity log, if I even think to check.
And I’ve noticed it’s not just me. This isn’t about having a bad memory, it’s the way the feed is designed. You’re not really meant to linger. You’re nudged to keep scrolling. Always the next thing. The next clip. The next hit of something new.
